Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Fall - 07/08/2025 - 09/08/2025

Spring/Summer - 11/18/2025 - 01/05/2026 (ONLY for newly admitted students in Spring 2026)

If you waived in the Fall 2025, your waiver is valid for the 25/26 policy year and no other action is needed on your part. The waiver is open for newly admitted Spring 2026 students.

Domestic Graduate Students:

All domestic students enrolled in state-side graduate or post-baccalaureate programs at SDSU and SDSU Imperial Valley are required to carry health insurance. To comply with the University’s health insurance requirement, students must either enroll in the SDSU student health insurance plan (SHIP) or waive by submitting proof of alternate health insurance each academic year. Students who do not take action will be enrolled in SHIP after the waiver deadline, January 5, 2026.

Alternate Health Insurance Requirements:

To qualify for a waiver of GSHIP, your alternate health insurance must meet or exceed the requirements as set forth below and AHP must receive the waiver request by the waiver deadline, January 5, 2026.

  1. The health insurance must be currently active.
  2. The health insurance plan must be Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant.
  3. The health insurance company must be owned, headquartered, and operated in the United States.
  4. The health insurance must provide access to primary care, specialty care, and emergency/urgent care with San Diego area and surrounding counties.

If your alternate health insurance meets the above minimum requirements, acquire the following scanned documents to submit a waiver request:

  1. The front and back of your insurance member ID card.

IMPORTANT: In order to waive or enroll, you will need to use your official SDSU student email address and create a password.  SDSU GSHIP students already have an account set up and cannot create a new account.  If you're unable to login, please contact [email protected]
